Protecting Children from Tobacco

Smarter than Smoking advocates for policies and strategies that are most likely to reduce the uptake of smoking. These policies and strategies aim to reduce tobacco promotion, availability and affordability for young people.

In doing so, Smarter than Smoking is a member of the Protecting Children from Tobacco Coalition coordinated by Action on Smoking and Health Australia (ASH). The coalition supports and advocates for the following;

  • removing tobacco products from view in all retail outlets;
  • ensuring that only adults are permitted to sell tobacco;
  • implementing a comprehensive licensing scheme for tobacco sellers;
  • banning the sale of tobacco products targeted at youth;
  • banning the sale of tobacco from temporary outlets and vending machines;
  • strengthening laws against the sale of tobacco to children and increasing penalties for breaking them;
  • making cars carrying children smoke-free by law; and
  • making public places highly frequented by children, such as playgrounds, public swimming pools and food service areas, smoke-free

  • the introduction of plain ‘generic’ packaging of all tobacco products sold in Australia
  • screening of anti-smoking advertisements before any film where smoking occurs or is implied, regardless of rating.
