New tobacco control laws in WA

Thursday, 17 September 2009

The new tobacco control laws passed by the WA parliament this week will be among the best in Australia and contribute greatly to protecting children from the harm of tobacco.

As a result of the new laws, the following will be phased in over the next 12 months in WA;

  • Removal of point-of-sale display of tobacco products in retail outlets
  • Smoke free outdoor eating areas in restaurants and cafes
  • Smoke free playgrounds and patrolled beaches
  • Smoke free cars carrying children less than 17 years
  • Smoke free licensed outdoor areas in hotels (only 50% of the outdoor area)

Smarter than Smoking and the Heart Foundation is in full support of these changes. These new provisions will help to drive smoking rates among young people down further, and also support adults in their attempts to quit smoking.
