Perth Modern School hosts Smarter than Smoking Drug and Alcohol Education Expo

Thursday, 4 November 2010

With the help of a SMART School Grant, Perth Modern School hosted its third annual Smarter than Smoking Drug and Alcohol Education Expo on Tuesday 24 August 2010.

Students completed drug-related classroom activities and participated in activities from various agencies, including Smarter than Smoking, Hepatitis WA, South East Metro Community Drug Service and School Drug Education and Road Aware during a school expo day.

Year 9 students who are studying drugs and alcohol in a harm minimisation context prepared a series of activities and information booths which highlighted the importance of awareness and self-responsibility in relation to drugs and alcohol.

Through the use of role plays, games and demonstrations, health education students showed that knowledge and social skills are important tools in developing strategies to assist in making healthy and positive life choices.

Smarter than Smoking information was on display during the expo and the students conducted quizzes using the Smarter than Smoking competition wheel. Students were required to answer smoking related questions and correct answers were rewarded with Smarter than Smoking prizes.

A range of educational resources are available from Smarter than Smoking to support smoking prevention activities within the school, including a Smarter than Smoking display system and competition wheel. Click here to find out more about our SMART School Grants.
