Armadale cinemas hosted its fourth annual Smarter than Smoking Young Directors’ Festival Awards night on 12 November, 2014. More than 350 students were involved in the film-making process, creating an anti-smoking television commercial aimed at positively influencing their peers.
The awards and overall winners for Primary and Secondary schools was presented by WA Opera soprano and Smarter than Smoking ambassador, Emma Pettemerides.
Serpentine Primary School won Best Primary Television Commercial with: “If you smoke you’re a joke. Smoking kills”. The ad shows the dangers of smoking with a ‘mad scientist’ creating a potion of chemicals – the same chemicals you would find in cigarette smoke.
Best Secondary Television Commercial was won by Roleystone Community College with “Be Smart. Don’t start”. The ad explores the strong influence of siblings on intentions to smoke.
The twelve schools who participated in the Smarter than Smoking Young Directors’ Festival in 2014 were Willandra Primary, Kingsley Primary, Beckenham Primary, Westfield Park Primary, Serpentine Primary, Challis Primary, Marri Grove Primary, Lumen Christi College, Roleystone Community College, Armadale Education Support Centre, Rockingham Senior High School and Canning Vale College.
“If you smoke you’re a joke, Smoking kills” and “Be Smart. Don’t Start” commercials were screened at Armadale Grand Cinema before each movie from Christmas Day until March 2015.
